Liran is located just north of East Timor. The larger island Wetar in the background, looking east (from helicopter).Wetar is located just 56 km north of Timor's northeastern coast. The island is 80 km long in east-west direction and 45 km wide in north-south direction, area about 3.600 sq. km. The interior of the island is mountainous and covered by rain forest, highest mountain is 1.412 m. The climate is in the wet season humid with lots of rain, while the rest of the year there can be long periods of drought.

The island is sparsely populated, most of the inhabitants are occupied with agriculture and fishing, most important product is sago. A majority of the population are Muslim, with a small group of Christians. Ethnically these people are related to Papuans (see Irian Jaya).

The south west tip of Liran. Looking north east with Wetar in the background. There is only a small village and a lighthouse here (from helicopter).A few roads on Wetar connects the cities on the north and south coast, the largest are Masapun, Ilwaki, Arwala and Wesiri. The island is known to have good conditions for diving and nice beaches. You can also go hiking here through forests and small villages.

Pulau Liran is located just outside the south west tip of Wetar. This is a small island with just a few inhabitants. Like Wetar it is surrounded by corral reefs and deep ocean, on the southern tip there is a small village and a lighthouse.
