South-East Asia Islands & Peninsula FAQ
Inside this thread you'll find a collection of links to TT threads and websites about attractions, activities, travel practicalities and news about Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, & Singapore.
Before you get reading (and posting), here's some advice from the TT team to help you find the info you need:
1. Do a TT search! At least five posters a week ask the same questions. The road is well travelled. Find those threads, add a reply (which brings the topic to the top, restarting the conversation), and then see #2.
2. Be specific. How much do you have to spend? How long is your trip? What are your interests (i.e. local culture and art, or sport, or food and drink, or none of the above). The details will help the community tailor your advice and answers.
3. Please use the right branch. This branch is intended for travel questions and resources...

Southeast Asia guidebooks now available by the chapter in Pick & Mix
Over the years many of you have told us you'd like to take just the parts of our books you really need. We thought about how best to do this, and last year launched Pick & Mix, which enables you to buy, download and print individual chapters from Lonely Planet guides in digital (PDF) format.
Last week, we added our entire range of Asia books to Pick & Mix, which means you can now get our Southeast Asia guides by the chapter. So you can check it out for yourself, the first chapter of each guide is free to download. You can see Pick & Mix here.
This is still a new thing for us, and I'd appreciate any suggestions or feedback.

Product Manager, Pick & Mix

Indonesia: Is it Safe?
I am looking to head to Indonesia in late April from Singapore, and i noticed the travel advisory that has been set for Indonesia as dangerous for Americans and Australians. I was just curious as to what the situation there is and if it is safe or not to travel there? Just looking for peoples opinions or anything other information...
Please add your comments and questions regarding the safety of travelling in Indonesia to this thread.

How should I get from Manila to Busuanga?
This is my first trip to the Philippines. I am flying into Manila and from there I would like to fly out to Busuanga. Has anyone ever made this flight?
I am also curious to know if the airport is difficult to navigate. My current plan is to fly into Manila and then attempt to purchase a ticket while I am there. I have heard some stories about online purchases not being honored once the traveler arrives to the ticket counter. Is there much truth to them?
Basically I would like the most hassle free way to get to Busuanga and any help would be much appreciated.

Stay in Puerto Princesa, Palawan
Hi,
We are planning to visit Puero Princesa from Dec.8 to Dec.13.
I would like to have some infomations about :
- rental of an airconditioned van with a driver
- clean and reasonable SPA and Hot springs
- white sand beach in the South part of the city (Honda Bay is a bit far from Luviminda where we will stay.)
- good Seafood restaurant
- good fishing points on the coast (not by boat)
- reasonable travel agency which arganises the tours (Islands hoppins, sunset cruise, Underground River, Mangrove River, etc.)

More shenanigans from Cebu Pacific
Dear Cebu Pacific Guest:
Thank you for booking your flight with us!
We have reviewed your online transaction and regret to inform you that we were unable to authenticate the credit card used for your booking.
Should you wish to continue with the flight, please contact our Reservations Department at 7020-888 or the nearest ticket office for payment information or you may proceed to the airport and pay upon check-in.
Otherwise, we shall construe the same as consent from your end to cancel the booking.
Thank you very much for your continued patronage.
Sincerely yours,
CEBU AIR, INC.
The proceed to the airport and pay upon check-in won't work because as soon as you show your mug they will inform you your booking was canceled. yes even Filipinos do get screwed by this wonderful airline. more »

Malaysian Borneo
My partner and I are looking for a place to stay in Sabah or Sarawak for a few weeks in December (after Hari Raya Haji and before Christmas). I'm checking into Kota Kinabalu, Miri, and Kuching (for their facilities) but am open to other suggestions. I'd love to find a place with Internet in the room but not at 5-star hotel prices. Does anybody know any good places? Thanks.

Indonesia working-holiday trip
Just taking suggestions on great places to go where me and my laptop can be productive, yet find some interesting distractions. I've been around Indonesia a number of times (and speak the language), so I'm not planning to go to Central Java or Padang or Lake Toba or Bali...leaning towards somewhere a bit less traveled (but with electricity)! This trip would be for mid-November. Any thoughts? Thanks!

2 weeks in Singapore - where should I go?
Hi everyone,
I'm going to be in Singapore for 2 weeks in January, visiting a friend who lives and works there. During the day when she is at work, I will be exploring the city alone.
I've been told 2 weeks might be too long to base myself just in Sing, as it's quite a small place.
So....does anyone know of any day trips to any islands near Singapore? Should I head over to Malaysia? Would it be safe for a lone 23-year-old female to do a quick trip to Malaysia on my own? Or are there any organised tours around the region?
As you can probably tell (eek) I'm not well-travelled in Asia (have only been to Europe, live in Oz) so am a bit clueless about setting off from Singapore for a few days to explore (where to go, what to do etc)...
Anyone's advice would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Dumaluan Beach Resort, Panglau Island, Bohol
Has any one stayed at Dumaluan Beach Resort in Panglau Island Bohol recently
Would you recommend it?
Their site doesn't have their rates - can anyone give me a rough idea of approx costs?
How far is it from Alona Beach?
How long would you recommend staying there?

Bali - cooking class & PadangBai
hi there,
couple of quick questions ...
heading to bali on oct 13 but only for ten days. staying in seminyak ... wondering if there's a decent (moderately priced) cooking class/school nearby, or alternatively whether it's easy enough to head to casa luna for the day to do theirs.
also - wouldn't mind checking out padang bai, but is it completely impractical to do that as a day trip? is it possible to get a driver and do it for the day, or even use perama shuttle?
many thanks,
kate

good value budget family accommodation in Langwaki
Hi
we're currently at a place in Sanur in Bali (Pondok Ayu) which is pretty much exactly what we're looking for at this stage of our family world travels. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for something similar in Langkawi where we head at the end of month and would like to chill out for a while.
The recipe is:
pool
easy access to beach
clean
internet
fridge in room
breakfast
a/c
$30-40 USD max per night.
any leads anyone?
cheers

Tour operators in south Sulawesi
We are planning a trip to south and central Sulawesi during the Christmas period. It would be for about eight days. Because of the limited time, it would seem practical to go with a tour operator.
Can anyone suggest a reliable tour operator in Makassar?

Safety in Indonesia
Hi,
I am travelling to Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Bali) in January 08 for 5 weeks - are there any places I should avoid due to safety issues?
I want to do some trekking in Sumatra - are there any good (ie. reasonably priced, well run) tours that anyone could recommend?
I'd appreciate any advice from people who've travelled these parts!
Cheers...
